Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been derived from a behavior analytic perspective and I based on the view that many maladaptive behaviours are produced by unhealthy attempts to avoid or suppress thoughts, feelings, or bodily sensations.
The main goals of ACT are to teach individuals to accept troublesome internal experiences, disengage from maladaptive control strategies, to learn to observe thoughts and feelings without fighting them or perceiving hem as reality, and to engage in behaviours that will result in valued outcomes and an improved life. To achieve these goals a wide range of mindfulness exercises and the use of paradox and metaphors are included in therapy. |
